  7. Listed below are solutions to known problems which may occur 
  8. installing or running the application.
  9.

  14. PROBLEM: The installation displays a warning that the 
  15. application may not run correctly using the current display 
  16. settings.
  17.  
  18. SOLUTION: This application requires that your display settings 
  19. are set to at least 800 x 600 and with more than 256 colors. To 
  20. change these settings on your machine proceed as follows:
  21.  
  22. From the Start button, choose "Settings" and "Control Panel". 
  23. This will bring up a list of controls, from which you should 
  24. choose the "Display" option. This brings up the Display 
  25. Properties panel. Click on the "Settings" tab to show the 
  26. current settings for the numbers of colours, desktop size and 
  27. font size. Ensure the "Color Palette" setting is set to a value 
  28. greater than 256 (eg. "65536 colors", "High Color", "16 bit" or 
  29. "True Color"). Use the "Desktop Area" slider to ensure that it 
  30. is set to at least "800 by 600 pixels". You can use the "Test" 
  31. button to check your selection. Click on "Close" when you have 
  32. finished.

  38. PROBLEM: The installation displays a message indicating 
  39. "administrator privileges" are required.
  40.  
  41. SOLUTION: The installer has to make changes to the system which, 
  42. when running under Windows NT, can only be made by a user with 
  43. administrator privileges. The installer must be run again when a 
  44. user with administrator privileges is logged-on. Once installed 
  45. the application can be used by any user.

  51. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a warning that 
  52. a system update is required.
  53.  
  54. SOLUTION: This application requires a recent version of a 
  55. Microsoft system file called "Comctl32.dll" to be installed. The 
  56. installer checks for this file and should prompt the user to 
  57. install the "COMCTL32.DLL" update. However if for any reason the 
  58. user skipped this part of the installation or it did not 
  59. complete correctly then it can be installed manually.
  60.  
  61. The update can be installed either by installing a recent 
  62. version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (4.01 SP2 or later) or by 
  63. running the Microsoft update program "401comupd.exe" which is 
  64. supplied with this application.
  65.  
  66. To run the update program:
  67.  
  68. * Ensure the application CDROM is in the drive.
  69.  
  70. * Close the application if it is already running.
  71.  
  72. * From the "Start" button menu, select "Run..." and type 
  73. "D:\setup\401cmupd.exe" and press RETURN (assuming D is your 
  74. CD-ROM drive). Follow the on-screen instructions to install the 
  75. update.
  76.  
  77. Below are the notes supplied by Microsoft for running this 
  78. update:

  80. You can use the file 401comupd.exe to install Comctl32.dll 
  81. (version 4.72.3611.1900) on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 
  82. NT 4.0. You cannot use 401comupd.exe for Windows 3.x, Windows 
  83. for Workgroups 3.x, Windows NT 3.x, Windows 98 SE, or Windows 
  84. 2000. Do not attempt to run 401comupd.exe on any system with 
  85. Internet Explorer 5.x installed. You must install Service Pack 3 
  86. or later on Windows NT 4.0 before installing 401comupd.exe. As 
  87. with all operating system changes, administrator privileges are 
  88. required to use 401comupd.exe on Windows NT 4.0.

  90. (note that the file 401comupd.exe has been renamed to 
  91. 401cmupd.exe on the CD because of filename restrictions)

  101. PROBLEM: I'm running Windows NT 4 and the installation fails 
  102. with a message indicating that I need to install "Service Pack 
  103. 3".
  104.  
  105. SOLUTION: This application uses a Microsoft utility called the 
  106. Windows Media Player. The Windows Media Player will only run on 
  107. Windows NT 4 if Service Pack 3 or later has been installed.
  108.  
  109. Please contact Microsoft to obtain the latest Service Pack. This 
  110. can usually be downloaded free of change from their web site. 
  111. Some computer magazines also supply it on their cover-mounted 
  112. CDs.

  118. PROBLEM: An error occurs during the part of the installation 
  119. process which says it is installing the "Windows Media Player"
  120.  
  121. SOLUTION: The Windows Media Player is a Microsoft component that 
  122. this application uses to display video sequences. The Windows 
  123. Media Player Installer is run as part of the main installation. 
  124. If you have problems with the Windows Media Player you can try 
  125. installing it manually.
  126.  
  127. To manually install the Windows Media Player: From the "Start" 
  128. button menu, select "Run..." and type "D:\setup\mpfull.exe" and 
  129. press RETURN (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive). Follow the 
  130. on-screen instructions to install the Windows Media Player.
  131.  
  132. If the Windows Media Player installation fails please contact 
  133. Microsoft for support. At the time of writing the latest version 
  134. of the Windows Media Player is available for download at 
  135. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/.

  141. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a message 
  142. indicating that the Windows Media Player must be installed.
  143.  
  144. SOLUTION: The Windows Media Player is a Microsoft component that 
  145. this application uses to display video sequences. The Windows 
  146. Media Player Installer is normally run as part of the main 
  147. installation. It may be that you skipped the installation of the 
  148. Windoes Media Player or it didn't install correctly.
  149.  
  150. To make sure the Windows Media Player is installed correctly you 
  151. can uninstall the application and then re-install it (see (8)) 
  152. or you can install it manually (see (5)).

  158. PROBLEM: When the application is run it displays a message 
  159. indicating it cannot find a file called "appsetup.txt".
  160.  
  161. SOLUTION: This indicates that for some reason the application 
  162. data files (which normally reside on the supplied CD) cannot be 
  163. accessed. This could occur if the CD is not in the drive or if 
  164. the drive letter of the CD drive has changed since the 
  165. application was last run.
  166.  
  167. Click on "OK" to dismiss this message and a window is displayed 
  168. which will allow the location of the file to be selected. 
  169. Navigate to the folder containing "appsetup.txt" and click OK. 
  170. Note that the "appsetup.txt" file is normally within a folder 
  171. called "shared".

  177. PROBLEM: I can't re-install the application.
  178.  
  179. SOLUTION: When the CD is inserted in the drive and autorun or 
  180. when setup.exe is run, a check is made to see if the application 
  181. is already installed. If it is, the currently installed version 
  182. is run otherwise the installation process is started.
  183.  
  184. If you want to re-install the application then you should 
  185. uninstall it first. To uninstall, select the uninstall option 
  186. from the Start menu or use "Add/Remove Programs" from within 
  187. "Control Panel".
  188.  
  189. If for any reason you want to force the application to 
  190. re-install even if it hasn't been uninstalled then you can run 
  191. D:\setup\setup.exe (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive) which skips 
  192. the check for a currently installed version.
